The Golden Rule of Space 📏
A common misconception is that because hamsters are small, they can live in tiny cages. In the wild, hamsters run up to 5 miles a night! In an apartment setting, you must provide horizontal floor space.
Surviving the Delhi Summer 🌡️
Hamsters cannot sweat. Because they originate from arid environments, they are highly susceptible to heatstroke when temperatures exceed 25°C (77°F). This is the biggest challenge for apartment owners in India.
Claim: Ambient room temperature is critical for hamster survival in Indian apartments.
Data: Hamsters require environments between 18°C and 24°C. Temperatures above 28°C can induce fatal heatstroke.
Action: Keep enclosures away from direct sunlight, utilize AC during peak hours, and provide ceramic cooling hides.
The Summer Cooling Checklist ❄️
Check off these items to ensure your apartment is summer-ready for your hamster.
The Nocturnal Reality 🌙
Hamsters are crepuscular/nocturnal. This means they sleep all day and run all night. In a 1BHK or studio apartment, this can be an issue if you are a light sleeper.
- The Wheel Matters: Never buy a cheap plastic wheel. Invest in a high-quality, wooden or silent-spinner acrylic wheel (minimum 8-11 inches depending on breed).
- Placement: Keep the enclosure in the living room, away from your bed and direct drafts from the AC unit.
- Enrichment: A bored hamster will chew the bars of their cage (which is incredibly loud). Ensure they have deep bedding (6+ inches) for burrowing and plenty of chew toys.
